When asked about their biggest problems with managing digital information, 140 respondents (64.5%) listed little or poor classification and difficulties in retrieval as their key concern. This was surprising as it has long been assumed by records managers that ICT managers had little time for traditional records tools like classification schemes. Good classification structures combined with well defined metadata, tied closely to business objectives, have tremendous potential to assist with the management of records and to also assist in their retrieval....

This research identifies how the IT function can create agility in existing information systems. Agility is the capability to quickly sense and respond to environmental perturbations. We con-trasted perspectives on agility from a widely used industry framework and that of the IS re-search literature. Beer’s Viable System Model was a useful meta-level theory to house agility elements from IS research and it introduced cybernetic principles to identify the processes re-quired of the IT function. Indeed, our surveys of 70 organizations confirmed that the applied theory better correlates with reported agility than does existing industry best practice.

Wikis could provide significant productivity and interoperability gains in the corporate environment. The open nature of Wikis and open office software coupled with the scope of HTML5 would enable the integration of presentations (including video and audio) and spreadsheets. Organisations need to consider possible timeframes for these developments in their ICT Strategies. I had hoped to use the session to explore the signposts and timeframe for this evolution.

When the Australian Government released the Website Accessibility National Transition Strategy in June 2010, it noted that “New technology has huge potential to make life better for people with disability, but we need to make sure that it is as easy to use as possible for all members of our community.” Online accessibility depends on the manner in which documents are presented and how they interact with the assistive technologies that are increasingly available.

Abstract:E-Waste, Electronic and Electrical waste, provides significant opportunity and threat. E-waste contains valuable metals such as gold, silver, copper and nickel. It also contains expensive to produce and relatively easy to recycle aluminum and heavy metals lead and mercury. However, significant amounts of E-waste ends up buried in landfill, from where the lead and mercury leaches out, contaminates soil and water and enters the human food chain.

Government spends about $170 million annually on electricity for its data centres, of which ICT uses only $70 million. The cooling for the ICT and other data centre support systems uses the remainder. Modern data centres are more efficient in their use of electricity. It is estimated that using modern data centres would avoid $35 million per annum in electricity costs alone.
