Using Computers and Telecommunications to reduce Greenhouse Gas emissions.
Eco-Sydney HomeIn 2007, the Greater Sydney population is around 4.5 million people. The area from Gosford to Wollongong, from the coast to the Blue Mountains is about 50x100=5000sqkm. This makes it an interesting place to live. But as the population increases, we need to plan to ensure that it is viable to live and work.
Whether it is the noise, the cost of injury or death from car accidents, the time wasted in traffic, or the carbon dioxide generated, road traffic is the biggest problem facing us today.
If the daily average of 15,724 vehicles travelling North along Johnston St (North of the Intersection with Booth St Annandale) in 2005 ADT, travelled just 1km and were 2004 Toyota Prius 1, they would generate 106g of CO2-e each. Which would add up to 106gx15,724Prius=1,666,744g (approx 1,666kg) of CO2.
A Eucalptus Tree which has grown a trunk of 100cm (1m) Trunk has absorbed 1,182kg of CO2-e(1). A Softwood Pine Tree with the same size trunk has absorbed just 787 kg CO2-e(Calculator)
Those 15,724 Prius travelling just 1km through Annandale, each day would have generated more CO2-e than 365*1.4=511 Eucalypt Trees.
