During the 18th and 19th Centuries, the Turpentine-Ironbark Forests which covered Sydney, were cut down for their valuable timber. The remaining local provenance vegetation succommed to farming, mining for clay, for pottery and bricks, sandstone quarries, for construction, and eventually residential development.
While the Rozelle Bay Nursery does not sell plants, you can buy local provenance species from Cornucopia Nursery, Marrickville Community Nursery and Strathfield Council Native Nursery.
This list of Local Provenance Plant Species, that is plants that would have been endemic in the area, is based on a list compiled by Catherine Rowland.
Local Provenance Plants are those that have naturally evolved to suit the climatic, light and soil conditions of an area. The Rozelle Bay Community Native Nursery has collected seeds and cuttings from the closest remaining bushland, since 1995, and propagated these to reintroduce Local Provenance Plants to the Sydney's Inner West.
The Federal Park Tidal Wetlands were created in a flat grassed area, around 2000. Mangroves were planted on the Rozelle Bay Foreshore area in 2006 construction (see construction).
