MEDIA RELEASE: FRIDAY 30 MARCH 2007

Life after george

by Hannie Rayson

(Hotel Sorrento, Falling From Grace, Inheritance)

Peter George – charismatic idealist, left-wing academic and bon vivant – is dead. But definitely not forgotten!

LIFE AFTER GEORGE is a passionate and insightful look at the social changes, political trends and cultural shifts in Australia across three decades, told through the personal stories of the four women in Peter George’s life: his young widow, two ex-wives and daughter, united in grief but generationally at odds with each other.

As the women re-evaluate their sometimes fraught relationships with this impossible, irresistible man, they come to appreciate the true nature of his influence on their lives and to better understand themselves and each other.

LIFE AFTER GEORGE also delivers a searing attack on the corporatisation of universities in a ‘user pays’ world and the pressure on tertiary institutions to bend to market forces and compromise academic standards in order to survive economically.

LIFE AFTER GEORGE displays one of Australia’s finest contemporary playwrights at the height of her powers: incisive, perceptive, witty and empathetic.

"My work," says Rayson, "is very much about trying to feel like my finger is on the pulse of what's happening, what's on people's minds."

LIFE AFTER GEORGE won the Louis Esson Prize for Drama, Victorian Premier’s Literary Awards, in 2000.

Director Ray Frankel makes his new theatre debut with this production.

Assistant Director: Lynden Jones

Cast: Ali Aitken, Christine Greenough, Errol Henderson, Kristie Jane Hogan, John Keightley and Kath Perry.
