During the 18th and 19th Centuries, the Turpentine-Ironbark Forests which covered Sydney, were cut down for their valuable timber. The remaining local provenance vegetation succommed to farming, mining for clay, for pottery and bricks, sandstone quarries, for construction, and eventually residential development.

Where to Buy Sydney Native Plants

The Rozelle Bay Nursery plans to sell plants. Their current capacity to produce enough stock is limited by their current temporary facilities. A purpose built nursery is being constructed (Feb 2012) in Wisdom Street. In the mean time, Inner West local provenance species are available from Cornucopia Nursery, Marrickville Community Nursery and Strathfield Council Native Nursery.

This list of Local Provenance Plant Species, that is plants that would have been endemic in the area, is based on a list compiled by Catherine Rowland.

Local Provenance Plants are those that have evolved to suit a location's natural unique conditions. Lots or little rain some years, every year or throughout the year or just when it is cold or hot. Levels of sunlight and temperature variations. Alkaline or acidic, clay or sandy soil with an abundance or low levels of phosphate, iron, calcium, nitrogen, humus, rocks, underground water reserves. Plants may rely on a particular insect, bird, possum or the wind for cross polination, heat to open pods and wood ash, rain and light to germinate (propagate). Plants have adapted to live in shady gullies, or salty tidal wetlands or Sunny well drained spots.

Since 1995, the Rozelle Bay Community Native Nursery has collected seeds and cuttings from the closest remnant bushland, to propagate and reintroduce Local Provenance Plants to Annandale and the Inner West of Sydney.
