new theatre is one of Australia's oldest theatre companies and sports a proud history that is intertwined with much of Sydney’s social development. new theatre mounts around six main stage productions and hosts a number of workshops every year. The casts and crews for these shows and events are drawn from the membership, so if you’re interested in experiencing theatre from the other side or just want to meet new people, being a part of new theatre is for you.
As a member of the new theatre, you will:
Membership responsibilities are few but fundamental- fail to meet them and you could see yourself barred from further production work or your membership cancelled.
Cast ResponsibilityThe new theatre is a not-for-profit, membership-based theatre organisation which means we’re as good as you make us. All work in the theatre- from administration to directing to serving drinks to designing costumes- is done by members and while we don’t have the resources of a major professional theatre company, we do have professional standards.
"new theatre is a theatre based on the principles of humanism and the realistic traditions of art. A theatre which has a sense of identification with mankind, both individually and collectively, and a belief in human progress. A theatre presenting a type of drama which, whatever its form, is centred on ideals and aspirations of the people for a better, fuller and freer life.
We believe that theatre must be vital, dynamic and meaningful to its time, and that, like every form of art, it must fulfill an essentially social function. Consequently, we are a "committed" theatre, committed to plays which deal positively but profoundly with the deepest problems confronting humanity and all the full complexities of personal and social relationships. We attach equal importance to the necessity of conforming at all times to the highest artisitic and creative standards.
In order that art and cultures shall fourish in a world of peace, we endeavour to present plays which will promote better international understanding and deter the waging of a world war which could only result in the destruction of civilisation and its centuries of achievement.
Finally, we recognise that the emergence of a national Australian drama is of prime importance in our social and cultural development. We therefore seek to encourage Australian playwrights and to perform their work whenever possible."
It is the active involvement of our members which has kept us alive for 70 years & keeps us kicking.
new theatre membership runs by calendar year (December to December). If joining after 30 June, membership is for July to December and is half that shown below (ie $30, $15, $45). In all cases, the $11 joining fee applies. All Fees include GST.
