"Significant Women" was an initiative of Leichhardt Mayor Kristine Cruden, and is designed to celebrate the achievement of women in the local area. Launched on International Women's Day (IWD) 1998, the projet aims to find and celebrate, through a postcard, women past and present, who have fought to improve the lives of other women. The first postcard was launched by Kris Cuden, Eva Cox and Shannon Simmons for IWD 99. The selection panel was faced with a challenge to select four women, to feature on the first postcard, from fourteen nominations. The first postcard features:
