Significant Women Postcard series.

"Significant Women" was an initiative of Leichhardt Mayor Kristine Cruden, and is designed to celebrate the achievement of women in the local area. Launched on International Women's Day (IWD) 1998, the projet aims to find and celebrate, through a postcard, women past and present, who have fought to improve the lives of other women. The first postcard was launched by Kris Cuden, Eva Cox and Shannon Simmons for IWD 99. The selection panel was faced with a challenge to select four women, to feature on the first postcard, from fourteen nominations. The first postcard features:

• Edna Ryan who lived for 92 years and made the most of the as a political activist and participant in social and cultural events.
• Shannon Simons was a founding member of the Leichhardt Women's Community Healthe Centre in 1974.
• Eva Cox is an unbridled critic of society and women's prospects in it. Working as an academic, director of non government and government organisations and an observer, she is called upon to participage in key debantes on social policy, feminism and power.
• Maybanke Anderson owned and editied a newspaper, she campaigned tirelessly - and successfully - for the right of Australian women to vote, for fair property and divorce laws, for free kindergartens and children's playgrounds, for adult and sex education and for federation.
